HealthPlex Fitness Center, Leads Charge to Combat Obesity Epidemic and Get Teens Active, Fit this summer

Clifton Park – 6/19/2008 – Teen obesity – it is a problem in need of a solution. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 17 percent of teens are overweight and obese and in addition, the U.S. Surgeon General reports that only 25 percent of teens are active for the recommended 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. It’s time for a jumpstart to the solution. That is why this summer HealthPlex Fitness Center, along with other members of the International Health, Racquet and Sports club Association (IHRSA), will open its doors to teens as part of the new program, the Teen Fitness Connection.
Launched by IHRSA, the Teen Fitness Connection is a new nationwide initiative designed to introduce exercise to teens by offering free summer matinee memberships. Designed as a community outreach initiative, the Teen Fitness Connection program invites club owners and executives to fight teen obesity and physical inactivity on a local level. More than 80 member health clubs and 3,395 teens from across the country are currently enrolled and leading the charge in keeping the U.S. teen population active and healthy this summer.
The program to begin on 7/1/2008 and end 8/31/2008, offers a complimentary membership to “first time visitor” teens aged 14-18 during the summer months. As a part of their membership agreement, teens must check into the club by 2:30 pm at the latest and leave by 3:30 pm on weekdays.
“Our club staff is extremely excited about this revolutionary teen program,” said Travis Gil of HealthPlex Fitness Center. “Teen Fitness Connection provides a chance for us to stand up and facilitate a solution to the teen obesity epidemic.” “Our hope is for teens to get fit and healthy this summer, and continue to experience the health benefits of exercise at our club year-round.” “We are thrilled to both help America’s teen population achieve their individual goals and to strengthen the sense of community within our club.” “We look forward to the energy and enthusiasm teens will bring to our club community.”
Teen Fitness Connection is part of a continuous effort by the health club industry to change the direction of teen fitness and health in the U.S. This special program will allow Halfmoon, Waterford and Clifton Park, teens to take exercise classes and use the facilities at HealthPlex Fitness Center, free of charge.
